| In honor of Martin Luther King Day, I challenged my students to participate in a service project. This was an extra credit assignment that definitely required EXTRA time and effort. 15 students accepted this challenge and truly demonstrated acts of kindness and service to others all while still managing to follow through with their other responsibilities such as homework, extracurricular activities, practices, and chores! Super impressed with these kiddos who are only 11 and 12 years old! Their efforts are a true testament that age is just a number! Anybody can make a difference! A few of their service projects included: reaching out and helping homeless people, cleaning up trash in the community, raising funds for Children’s Hospital of Orange County, raising funds and supplies for animals, creating a Bark Park Service for dog parks, and more! Students had to complete 3 parts of this project: The project started with Listening! Serving one’s community begins with careful observation to identify opportunities to help others. Students took notes on various scenarios that often happen in the “community”. Next, students, worked on Planning. A successful service project depends on thoughtfully mapping out a plan. Students had to interview a member of the community about the issue they wished to serve and help. They also had to research national statistics related on their issue and find news article, facts sheets, or government reports related to the issue. Afterwards, they planned and implemented the service activity. Lastly, students reflected on their experience by writing a reflection essay. Taking a moment to reflect on their service project and evaluating their results is an essential step in wrapping up a service project and preparing for the next one! |
